Project2
Material Futures

An exploration of Johannesburg’s materials and processes using RE-IY or adhoc methods to create objects of interest. This project was an outcome of the Circular Design Lab 2019 facilitated by the British Council. some of the materials investigated were:

HDPE
Oregon Pine
Leather

Material Futures
HDPE

The process of creating with waste HDPE (seen above) is intensive, from collection to cutting to shredding, heating and remoulding. I wanted to create an object that reflects the value of the energy that has gone into this material throughout its life cycle. This ring questions plastic’s value in our material ecology.

Oregon Pine

Why is there 200 year old Oregon Pine in my suburban house in Johannesburg, South Africa? measuring the distance this material has travelled really puts into perspective its value.

This test used the sawdust of the processed Oregon pine and turned it into biodegradable cladding.

Material Futures
Leather

Leather in South Africa has deep connotations of material value, I’m interested in the offcut’s offcut, how we can process small leather components to repair or prerepair footwear. This stems from the constant need to repair footwear, particularly sports shoes like football boots.
